CASRAM Presents: Jaguar Wright & Alison Carney 10.31.09

October 29th, 2009 · No Comments

SATURDAY OCTOBER 31st

CASRAM  presents:
Philly Soul sensation
JAGUAR WRIGHT & BAND LIVE IN CONCERT!

@ The Scene
2221 Adams Pl. NE
Washington, DC
check out the new single “Beautiful” for download!
Between major projects fans have been granted the opportunity to receive doses of Jaguar with the release of various live underground projects that expose a side of her that is present but not as bold on studio recordings. To see Jaguar Wright perform is to come alive in your seat -that is if she has not already made you rise to her occasion. Wright commands her band with maestro like flare and creates impromptu tunes that display her natural ability to do no wrong to a song. A Jaguar Wright show is sure to leave the audience exhausted and satiated.

Fans can look forward to Wright’s third album, tentatively titled, “DAMN, DAMN, DAMN” set to be released in 2010. Jaguar provided some insight as to where this attention grabber of an album title came from. When asked what fans can expect from this CD, Wright replied “Just a bunch of cussing like DAMN DAMN DAMN! The purpose of this bold title is to cross my favorite time in music with what’s current in music…to show how we never truly got away from where we started from. This album will be Denials Delusions Decisions Volume 2, marking the revival of that beloved brand name.”

So much so a brand name that Wright has chosen the 3D’s for her first book title. “Denials Delusions Decisions” will be a fictional story based on realistic events. The main character of the book is a woman who has struggled for the better part of 20 years trying to work through the ramifications of her past indiscretions. With a new EP, a forthcoming album and the debut of Jaguar the author, there are many great things in store that will only add to the legacy of this entertainer.

CASRAM Presents along with
The solSource Group and Historical Society of Washington, D.C.

Presents Hip Hop Cinema Cafe:

Say My Name

Saturday, Oct 31, 2009
The Historical Society of Washington, D.C.
801 K Street, NW
Washington, DC
3PM to 5PM

In a hip hop and R’n’B world dominated by men and noted for misogyny, the unstoppable female lyricists of Say My Name speak candidly about class, race, and gender in pursuing their passions as female MCs. This worldwide documentary takes viewers on a vibrant tour of urban culture and musical movement: from hip hop’s birthplace in the Bronx, to game on London’s eastside.

Featuring interviews from a diverse cast of women including Remy Ma, Rah Digga, Jean Grae, Erykah Badu, Estelle and newcomers Chocolate Thai, Invincible and Miz Korona, this powerful documentary delves into the amazing personal stories of women balancing professional dreams with the stark realities of poor urban communities, race, sexism and motherhood. The more then 18 artists featured in Say My Name battle for a place in a society that creates few changes for women. From emerging artists filled with new creativity, to true pioneers like MC Lyte, Roxxanne Shante, and Monie Love, these are women turning adversity to art. http://www.saymyname.org

After the film, you are invited to participate in an audience discussion with Princess Of Controversy. Alison Carney, Carolyn Malachi and moderated by Konyka Dunson of WPFW/DCTV.

The Saartjie Project-Sold Out TONITE!

October 10th, 2008 · No Comments

SOLD OUT!

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE 2008 ‘CAN A SISTA ROCK A MIC?!’ FESTIVAL

THE SAARTJIE PROJECT IS BACK!

The Saartjie Project is a collective of artists and activists placing a necessary focus upon the life and legacy of Saartjie (Sara) Bartman, who is also known as The Hottentot Venus.

If you’re familiar with her tragic story, you know that European fascination with her natural curves led to her remains being bottled upon display after her death, with nothing less than similarly oppressive poking, prodding and disenfranchisement of Saartjie while she lived.

We explore the continued fascination with the black female form, what it means to be in the black female body, honor Saartjie’s humanity and bring her story/our story to life through drama, song, dance and spoken word.

Tonight: Hip Electro-Funky Lady MCs: TK Wonder, Eagle Nebula, Ra the MC, Op Swamp, Roxwell

October 9th, 2008 · No Comments

THURSDAY OCT 9, 7:00pm
Bohemian Caverns
2001 11th St. NW
21+

tix: $10

Can A Sista Rock A Mic? presents a true collage of hip-hop inspired performances from newcomers Bless Roxwell & Ra the MC, electric funk band OP Swamp 81, funky hip-hop’s Eagle Nebula, and electro-hip Ms. TK Wonder (with Taylor McFerrin).

Hosted by XO and DJ JAV

From the Washington Post: “Tonight’s CASRAM set focuses on a near-extinct species: the female MC. Not the video vixen — they’re ubiquitous — but the gifted lyricist. TK Wonder (listen) sits somewhere between M.I.A. and Flying Lotus, with Taylor McFerrin contributing a special brand of spaceship electro beats. Rhymewise, TK’s ability to spit at aggressive tempos is rivaled by few of her contemporaries, and she’s got that killer combination of looks and skills that the game is sorely missing.”
